I Won my Heat (or maybe I didn’t because I was hit by flying mexican food…)

3 Oct

These pictures all make me smile!  Swim meets are pretty fun- although this particular meet in Branson was so hot all morning that I struggled to stay cheerful.  Well, let’s be honest.  I failed to remain cheerful.  I did manage to not say the grouchy things I was thinking as my skin baked in the hot still air.  Around noon, a slight breeze fitfully began blowing and I cheered up.
Anyways, my kiddie pies are so cute!  Happy Sigh.

Image

Still in pajamas in the car- we usually have to leave home at about 5:30 a.m.  to get to the meet on time.

Enjoying a cheese stick.  The picnic lunch and snacks I pack for swim meets are the best.

Image

Yup the cheese sticks are a hit.

Image

Did I mention they like cheese sticks?

I did research about what foods are best at a swim meet and this day, I changed what I had been packing in the cooler.  Instead of sandwiches and chicken salad, I brought extra fruit, yogurt, and hummas with crackers.  It seemed to work.

Pumpkin Pie cut 19 seconds off her 100 yard medley.

Blueberry Pie cut 25 seconds off his 200 yard medley.

Cherry Pie won her heat in the 50 yard backstroke and cut 3 seconds off her best time!

Bet you’ve never seen a Mexican with freckles before!

mmmm….graham crackers and peanut butter!  Air Conditioning!  The ride home has its perks.

Okay so our government has been shut down for 3 days now while both sides sit on their self-righteous high horses and  refuse to negotiate or compromise.  They throw blame and mud at each other and do essentially nothing.

The radio news media are taking predictable sides as well, with NPR talking about how Republicans are refusing to budge and Conservative talk radio guys talking about Obama and the Democrats refusing to budge.

Left in the lurch is us, the American people, particularly the 800,000 federal employees who have not had a job for the last 3 days.  And then there are the businesses who depend on visitors to places like National Parks for their customers.  And the effect trickles onward.

Some of the pundits have been saying things like

“Big deal, the government shut down.  Nothing happened.  There are no riots.  A few people have been inconvenienced is all.”

That number (800,000 federal employees)  I got from NPR.  I doubt that it includes the few thousand Missouri Guard soldiers who’s Guard Drill was canceled this weekend because of the government shut down.  You would think that our state guard would be paid by the state, but it isn’t, it is paid by the Federal Government.  That is, no doubt, a troubling situation in and of itself that ought to be considered.

The real effect of this on my family is a 15% reduction in our income for the month.  Basically the whole amount we have budgeted for food and household necessities like diapers and toilet paper.

Now, I’d like to know if Mike Levine or Rush Limbaugh would call a 15% reduction in their monthly income an “inconvenience.”  More likely they would be screaming from the rooftops about suffering and injustice.

I’d like to know if the congressmen are still getting paid during the shutdown, while they serve themselves and their own party, instead of the people who elected them.  Are the coffee gophers on furlough as well as the National Guard?

Call me crazy, but I thought the whole idea behind a representative government is that the representatives get together, talk about the needs of the people, and then make compromises on how to best serve the people.

I’m not saying my family is going to crash and burn this month.  We will muddle through and be ok.  I’m pretty sure there are other families that this will hit much harder than us.  The longer the shut down lasts, the harder it will be.  I’m the first one to admit that the government needs to cut some fat, and I realize that means some people will lose their jobs.  If my husband is one of them, we will deal with that.  What just really chaps me is this indecision-do nothing but blame the other party crap that is going on.

Man up and do your jobs, Congress.

That is all.

Its Always Fun When Family Comes

2 Oct

My sisters Katie & Amanda and my brothers Matt & Eddie came to visit for July.  I spent as much time as I possibly could visiting with them and playing with my nephews.

It was not enough time!

The first day they were here, my sister Mary planned a huge Bug Party.  It was the most awesome party ever since it included bugs, food, and water games.

Don’t worry that George totally sat and watched from the porch the whole time.  That is what you get to choose when you are 3.

Aunt Amanda made sure everyone got sprayed with the hose often during the relay races.  Just to keep moral up and the games moving along.

Enthusiasm is very contagious! and Aunt Mary is like a walking plague house of enthusiasm contagion.  We are all so lucky she is part of our family!

July 4th

The DH was asked to give a patriotic speech at our town’s Freedom & Fireworks 4th of July Celebration this year.  He felt very honored by the request and worked hard to write a speech worthy of the occasion.  He delivered it very well–I told him I was not ashamed to be his wife.  Our local newspaper ran a very nice article about the night, including a large part of DH’s speech.

The kid’s favorite part of the night was getting to ride in golf carts from the parking lot to the stage area–since we were VIP guests for the night.

The fireworks were magical to watch-as they always are.

On our ride back to our cars, one of the golf cart drivers commented that she was having a hard time seeing–it being dark and golf carts not being equipped with headlights.  Peach Pie informed her very matter-of-factly, “You need to eat more carrots so you can see in the dark.”

I guess my kids are listening when I go on and on about why eating vegetables is good for them.

We decided that the perfect end to the celebration would be a visit to Braum’s.  We were right.

Ornaments for Grandma

30 Sep

GBennion83rd

June 30th was my Grandmother’s 83rd birthday.  For the past 34 years she has handmade a Christmas ornament for each of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  Here is a link to a post by my cousin in 2006 showing the ornaments up to then.  Grandmother had 13 children, and so her grandchildren and great-grandchildren number over 100 now. That is a whole bunch of ornaments that she makes each year.  I think she begins working on them in January.  This year one of my cousins suggested that we all make her an ornament for her birthday.  My siblings and I were out of the information loop until about 2 days before the party.  When I found out about the plan, I instantly felt that Grandma, who had been a kindergarten teacher for more than 15 years, would most love ornaments featuring original artwork by the littlest kiddies.

Image

Thanks to the miracles of internet, scanners, and email, I had all my siblings who live far away send me pictures of their children’s drawings.  I printed them out on fabric and backed them with felt.  Cegan helped me and we got them all put together in time for Grandma’s birthday.  I think they turned out super cute and the kiddie pies were all excited to make something for Great-Grandma.

OrnamentsButton

It turned out my mom had a plan for us all along, so we also made button ornaments to represent each of us who are grandchildren and too old to be good at making cute drawings.  We also made button ornaments to represent the great-grandkids who were too little to draw or didn’t submit artwork.  (My mother contributed 12 children and 24 great-grandchildren to the total of Grandma’s progeny, so we had no small number of ornaments to make.) My girls and Cegan’s boys helped make the button ornaments, and those all turned out super cute, too.  I have to admit that I had been skeptical because anything I’ve ever tried to make with buttons was never as cute as the picture promised it would turn out to be.  But my mom is good at picking the right kind of buttons and these all looked even better in real life than they do in the picture.

My grandmother is one whom I look up to and try to be like as I strive to become a better person and a better mother.  Here is a picture of her when she was a young mother in 1954:

Here is a picture of her from when I was growing up and she was teaching kindergarten at the school I attended.  When I was in 5th grade, I got to go to her classroom for a few hours each week to be her helper.  I loved it so much.

June

29 Sep

I’m still trying to catch up after not posting all summer.  June was a busy month for us.

Image

First, the DH and I went on a 4 day Handcart Trek as a “Pa” and “Ma”.  We had a family of 8 youth, 4 boys and 4 girls, who we guided and encouraged along the way.  We pulled our loaded handcart over many miles of a prairie reserve in southwest Missouri.  Our kids were great–always cheerful and willing to help with all the work that needed doing.  This was the DH & my second time going on a trek as a Ma and Pa.  The first was 8 years ago and I felt that we were much better parents this time around.  (Hey, we have had 8 years of parenting our own kids to help us get better.)  I still feel awkward around teenagers but I’m getting a little better, I hope, at sharing my life experiences and things that have helped me when they ask for my advice.

Image

We got home from the handcart trek on Saturday evening and early Monday morning, the DH left for 17 days of annual training with the National Guard.  He got to ride in a BlackHawk helicopter one day, which was the highlight for him.

I took the kids to swim practice every morning and can’t remember doing much else the whole time besides assigning cleanup chores and cooking food for the ravenous swimmers.  I did blog a couple of times while he was gone here and here.

I also replaced the air filter in our van-which turned out to be a lot easier than I expected.

IMG_0446

My hope was that I would be done with morning sickness by the time DH got back.  Every time I have “morning” sickness, which for me is all day sickness, I try to remember if it was really this bad the last time, or if it is worse this time around.

I think this time round really was worse because the DH washed dishes more times in the month of May than he had in the entire rest of our 14 years of marriage.

So I was really hoping to be feeling better when he got back.  Alas, I was still feeling pretty sick every day when DH got home.  But a couple of weeks after that, I began feeling more human again and my stomach stopped threatening upchuck with every change in sound, smell, or movement near my person.

Image

While DH was gone, the kids had their first swim meet of the summer–luckily put on by our home team so I could leave the 2 youngest kids with friends for the day.

Pumpkin Pie placed in two of her races and all of them got best times.  It was hot and we ran out of drinking water with 2 hours left, so I had to buy some gatorade at the concession stand, but it was a great start for our summer meets.  Ha! turns out I already blogged about this meet here.  This blog is getting as hit and miss as my journal is.  yikes!

Image

Daddy finally came home and we were all very happy.  Cutie Pie  had to try on his dog tags and boots while we all just sat in the living room and were happy to be together.

Image

There may have been some silliness.

DH had talked about volunteering for a 4 month deployment to Guatemala in 2014, and I had initially been very positive that we could handle it and that I would be fine because I thought it would be such a good experience for him.

But after this two and a half weeks without him around, I had to confess that I wasn’t sure at all that I could handle everything on my own for 4 months, especially considering that there would also be an added 3 month old baby by then.  He admitted having the same doubts and decided not to volunteer for the mission.  I wish a little bit that I could have let him go, because I know he would have loved the project–which is building and renovating school houses.  But it was the truth that the time would have been a huge struggle for me, so I don’t feel guilty about the decision we made.

And thus ended June….

Resilient

19 Sep

Want more resilient kids? Teach them your family history. Tell them where Grandma went to school. Tell them about challenges family members overcame.

“The more children know about their families’ histories, the stronger their sense of control over their lives, the higher their self-esteem, and the more successfully they believe their families function.”~readers digest Sept 2013 issue “The Stories that Bind Us.”

Pumpkin Pie’s Birthday

9 Sep

IMG_0548Pumpkin Pie turned 9.

She had a great summer in swim team, and only missed swimming in the finals at A Champs by a tiny bit.  She is the best at taking care of Baby Dumpling.  She practices the piano even if I haven’t given her a lesson in weeks.  She likes helping me cook.  She is her teacher’s best helper in school and at church.

Love her tons!

For her birthday, she wanted trifle.  It was delicious!  Trifle is a great dessert for around the beginning of July when you can still get fresh blueberries and strawberries.  Such a patriotic dessert!

Trifle or “Red, White, and Blue Dessert”

1 plain yellow cake–from a mix or your favorite recipe.  Remind me to share mine sometime.

16 oz strawberries, washed & sliced

3 cups blueberries, washed

3 bananas, sliced

2 cups heavy cream, whipped (or non-dairy whipped topping)

4 boxes of cherry or strawberry jello, prepared

2 large boxes of vanilla pudding, prepared, or this homemade quick pudding

Cut the cake and the jello into cubes.

In a large bowl (4 quart or bigger capacity) layer the ingredients:

1.  Cake

2.  Jello

3.  Pudding

4.  Berries–save a few to sprinkle on top for pretties

5.  Whipped Cream

6.  Sprinkling of berries

Devour the creamy deliciousness and rejoice in how patriotic you have been for the day.

Apology & Cherry Pie’s Birthday

9 Sep

I know, it’s been like 5 months since I posted anything for you, my adoring readers.  This is my obligatory apology post.  I have tons of excuses that range from the difficulties of posting from an iPhone to 3 months of the worst morning sickness ever and just being super busy.

The good news is I have tons of fun things saved up to share with you.  I know, you are so glad.

First of all, CHERRY PIE turned 11.

Image

Her hair has gotten so long!  She loves to write and direct plays for the family to perform. She loves creating elaborate plans of all kinds, and then I have to try to make reality measure up.  Luckily, she is pretty happy if I get close.  She is suddenly really helpful with her younger siblings and does chores without me nagging her, which is AWESOME.  She is learning to play flute, just as I did in band, which is super cool.  She scavenged a fat quarter out of my stash and folded it and hand sewed it up the sides and it became a 4 pocket purse with all the stitching on the inside—just did that on her own with no guidance from me and no pattern.  Whoah!

I think she is pretty amazing.

She wanted a Harry Potter Birthday Party

We had a potions class for all her guests.  I boiled a red cabbage and then had jars labeled stuff like unicorn powder and ground mandrake root and basilisk venom (baking soda, washing soda, vinegar, etc.)  The girls had fun mixing and watching the color changes until all the ingredients ran out.)

Blueberry Pie was awesome and carved wands for all the girls from sticks he found outside.

The party was declared a success.  Image
