Easter 2017

8 Apr

We drove to Ozark and did an egg hunt with Aunt Cegan and her kids. It was a fun day, and no one was scared of the Easter Bunny!

The Pink Kitty Is The Important Thing.

30 Mar

I made this doll in December and gave her to Banana Cream Pie for her 5th birthday.

Banana Cream Pie burst into tears, threw the dolly on the floor and screamed at me that she did not want this for her birthday.

None of my other children have ever acted like that.

So I put the dolly away, thinking maybe I’d give her to someone who’d love her, a niece or a friend’s daughter.  But not ready to part with her yet.

Banana Cream Pie found dolly the other day and said, “When are you going to make her a pink kitty? You said you would.”  Did I?

She pestered me all Sunday afternoon until I sat down with some felt and made a pink kitty.  Now  dolly is acceptable, I guess.

I’m pretty sure a pink kitty by itself would have gotten as good or better reviews. I’m still asking myself if it’s my fault that I have an ungracious child. Nature? Nurture?  Who knows.

I actually have pieces for 4 more dolls cut out, but not the heart to make them up yet.  You can find the pattern free over at Make it and Love It, but I can’t guarantee you child will love it.  I sure think it’s a cute pattern.  The only alteration I made from the instructions was to make the doll hair out of flannel instead of felt for durability.

Invitation Poems

30 Mar

This week we read some Songs from the Tempest “Come unto these yellow sands…” and “Where the Bee sucks, there suck I…”

Then we wrote invitation poems–invitations to magical colorful places full of sound where marvelous things can happen.

I just really love Key Lime Pie’s poem because it is so full of her personality.

Through the Jungle
Come with me to the nice green jungle.
We’ll swing from vines,
Climb trees.
We’ll visit the gorillas
Boom, boom boom!
(They pound their chests.)
And the parrots
Rawk, rawk!
We’ll see the jaguars,
And the jaguars might chase us
So we’ll hide in the trees.
Maybe we’ll even see some lizards.
We’ll swing back through the vines
Down through the trees.
We’ll go back home
And eat leafy greens.

Experimenting with Chalk Pastels

My word for the year resurfaces this weekend, part 1

26 Mar

I listened to this interview this afternoon. It is incredibly insightful as well as delightful and inspiring.

This year my focus is to better understand the idea of remembrances–the things we share as human beings that tie us together and anchor us to our past, thereby creating meaning for our future.

This interview begins there and then continues on gloriously. Why are stories important? Why do our children need to hear our shared story? Why is religion important? Why are institutions important? Why are covenants important? It’s an hour long, but worth every second to listen, this interview between Pulitzer Prize winning journalist David Brooks and Rabbi Sacks.
