Family Movie Night

Cultural literacy includes great movies

The Empire Strikes Back

We also taste-tested 4 kinds of Girl Scout cookies and rated them to find out which one was the best. Thin Mints and Lemon-Ups tied for first with Samoas coming second and Trefoils third. However, every cookie was someone’s favorite.

We also watched Return of the Jedi a couple days later. It was unsurprisingly the kids’ favorite because it has Yoda and the Ewoks.

We Learn Best From People Who Really Care About Us

“Human beings learn best and most from other human beings…and we learn best from people who really care about us.”

Holy Ground

28 Jan

“At the end of our lives He (God) is going to look into our hearts. What is it He will find there, I wonder? Will He find that we used the geography lesson, the dreaded math test, the teetering laundry pile, and the boiling over soup pot to draw closer to Him? Did we use these gifts to teach our children to lift their eyes heavenward? Were the tedious details of a day offered up as a way for us to love Him, or were they merely gotten through, checked off, accomplished? Did we even realize that every ordinary day, we were standing on holy ground, building a cathedral far more glorious than what we could dream up on our own?”

This is Heaven

28 Jan

My thoughts on Matthew 19:

I don’t think this is a story about sacrificing and doing what children need or want when Mom is tired and needs rest. I think this is a story about what brought rest to Jesus.

How did Jesus feel about the children?

Maybe after a long day of healing mulititudes,

of being challenged by Pharisees,

accused by scribes,

rejected by people who just wanted more magic bread,

teaching his disciples (who just still didn’t “get it”)

—maybe after all that, Jesus just wanted to be surrounded by some innocence and some pure love unfeigned.

He said, “Please, let the little children come. THIS is heaven. Let me be surrounded by heaven for a little while.”

Bed is much Better

Me every time my husband asks if I want to go snow camping.

Visiting Katie

15 Jan

We had a long weekend for Martin Luther King Day, so we drove to Grand Junction to visit my sister and her family.

Ben and Nate went camping in the snow, and Nate taught Ben some skiing.

What Ben said afterwards was, “It was kind of a suffer fest, but that is what I wanted.”

Meanwhile, I lay around at the house. We played games, watched the Dungeons and Dragons Movie with Chris Pine (hilarious) and snuggled her kitties. I wish we had a kitty instead of Guinea pigs now. I have several new games on my wishlist now. The kids played lots of Nintendo Switch also, and Katie and I played a little Tetris- my favorite!

Katie made crepes for us, and I made Korean Soy Butter chicken for them. 😋

I also got the first haircut I’ve liked since we moved to Utah. 😅 Only a five hour drive from home.

Monument Valley, Week 24

11 Jan

Walking to school while it is snowing outside is fun. I considered driving, but I don’t like driving in the snow, and it is just slightly less than a half mile to walk to school. I’m glad my sister, Mary gave me this coat. The fur-edged hood books a lot of wind and snow from my face and holds warm air in.

A Bad Case of Stripes

I accidentally dressed like a children’s book today.

Zeke

I require the kids to read 20 minutes every day after school. Zeke is reading The Wild Robot Protects by Peter Brown. We love the Wild Robot books around here.

Handy Woman

I had a high energy day today. So I cleaned the house, folded all the laundry, meal prepped, and did some projects that have been waiting for awhile, including cutting a board to go underneath the Guinea pig cage. (Because the cage is a hair wider than the laundry room counter, it needed better support.)

The Man is the House has been saying he would do it, but I got tired of waiting. He is gone to guard drill this weekend, of course.

I couldn’t find all the tools- like the measuring tape. I had to improvise with my quilting ruler.

I was successful, and now there is less Guinea pig bedding getting kicked out onto the floor.
