Wonder Companion

14 May

“If a child is to keep alive his inborn sense of wonder, he or she needs the companionship of at least one adult who can share it, rediscovering with him the joy, excitement, and mystery of the world we live in.”
Rachel Carson.

I’m halfway through “Last Child in the Woods” by Richard Louv, and I’m feeling smug about the emphasis on Natural Science in my Charlotte Mason homeschool. But also, I need to do better at learning about what is in our own backyard.

In the Child Himself

24 Apr

Finally got a copy of this little gem of a book!

“We are surrounded by voices crying first for one reform and then for another, a little here and a little there. Energies and finances are dissipated in a welter of theory, while what we seek, an education which draws out the best of every child and builds a nation of responsible citizens, eludes us at every turn of the road. The solution to our problems does not lie in more nursery schools, bigger comprehensives, …and the re-establishment of grammar schools. It lies in the child himself…in the realization that a child is born a person.” #

In an Acceptable Time

19 Apr
I read Psalm 69 this morning. ❤️
so heartbreaking and hopeful all in one.

“…but as for me, my prayer is unto Thee, O LORD, in an acceptable time; O God, in the multitude of thy mercy hear me, in the truth of thy salvation deliver me…For God will save Zion…and they that love his name shall dwell therein.”

Palm Sunday 2022

10 Apr

Because of Him, we can feel joy.

We don’t have palm leaves in Missouri, but we do have Osage orange branches.

We shouted “Hosanna!” to God, like the people of Jerusalem on Palm Sunday.

Zeke asked, “How does shouting Hosanna give me faith in Christ?”

I told him “Hosanna” means “save us now.” When we shout Hosanna to God, we are recognizing our need for a Savior and rejoicing that God sent His Son that we might be saved.

You Never Know

9 Apr

You never know how much good you do.”
Now, my dear sisters, that is the way with you. You are doing the best you can, and that best results in good to yourself and to others. Do not nag yourself with a sense of failure. Get on your knees and ask for the blessings of the Lord; then stand on your feet and do what you are asked to do. Then leave the matter in the hands of the Lord. You will discover that you have accomplished something beyond price. ~Gordon B Hinkley
