I Won my Heat (or maybe I didn’t because I was hit by flying mexican food…)

3 Oct

These pictures all make me smile!  Swim meets are pretty fun- although this particular meet in Branson was so hot all morning that I struggled to stay cheerful.  Well, let’s be honest.  I failed to remain cheerful.  I did manage to not say the grouchy things I was thinking as my skin baked in the hot still air.  Around noon, a slight breeze fitfully began blowing and I cheered up.
Anyways, my kiddie pies are so cute!  Happy Sigh.

Still in pajamas in the car- we usually have to leave home at about 5:30 a.m.  to get to the meet on time.

Enjoying a cheese stick.  The picnic lunch and snacks I pack for swim meets are the best.

Image

Yup the cheese sticks are a hit.

Image

Did I mention they like cheese sticks?

I did research about what foods are best at a swim meet and this day, I changed what I had been packing in the cooler.  Instead of sandwiches and chicken salad, I brought extra fruit, yogurt, and hummas with crackers.  It seemed to work.

Pumpkin Pie cut 19 seconds off her 100 yard medley.

Blueberry Pie cut 25 seconds off his 200 yard medley.

Cherry Pie won her heat in the 50 yard backstroke and cut 3 seconds off her best time!

Bet you’ve never seen a Mexican with freckles before!

mmmm….graham crackers and peanut butter!  Air Conditioning!  The ride home has its perks.

Pumpkin Pie got 3rd place in the 50 yard freestyle. Peach Pie dropped 13 seconds from her 50 yard backstroke time.

Blueberry Pie dropped 15 seconds off his individual medley time.

June

29 Sep

I’m still trying to catch up after not posting all summer.  June was a busy month for us.

Image

First, the DH and I went on a 4 day Handcart Trek as a “Pa” and “Ma”.  We had a family of 8 youth, 4 boys and 4 girls, who we guided and encouraged along the way.  We pulled our loaded handcart over many miles of a prairie reserve in southwest Missouri.  Our kids were great–always cheerful and willing to help with all the work that needed doing.  This was the DH & my second time going on a trek as a Ma and Pa.  The first was 8 years ago and I felt that we were much better parents this time around.  (Hey, we have had 8 years of parenting our own kids to help us get better.)  I still feel awkward around teenagers but I’m getting a little better, I hope, at sharing my life experiences and things that have helped me when they ask for my advice.

Image

We got home from the handcart trek on Saturday evening and early Monday morning, the DH left for 17 days of annual training with the National Guard.  He got to ride in a BlackHawk helicopter one day, which was the highlight for him.

I took the kids to swim practice every morning and can’t remember doing much else the whole time besides assigning cleanup chores and cooking food for the ravenous swimmers.  I did blog a couple of times while he was gone here and here.

I also replaced the air filter in our van-which turned out to be a lot easier than I expected.

My hope was that I would be done with morning sickness by the time DH got back.  Every time I have “morning” sickness, which for me is all day sickness, I try to remember if it was really this bad the last time, or if it is worse this time around.

I think this time round really was worse because the DH washed dishes more times in the month of May than he had in the entire rest of our 14 years of marriage.

So I was really hoping to be feeling better when he got back.  Alas, I was still feeling pretty sick every day when DH got home.  But a couple of weeks after that, I began feeling more human again and my stomach stopped threatening upchuck with every change in sound, smell, or movement near my person.

Image

While DH was gone, the kids had their first swim meet of the summer–luckily put on by our home team so I could leave the 2 youngest kids with friends for the day.

Pumpkin Pie placed in two of her races and all of them got best times.  It was hot and we ran out of drinking water with 2 hours left, so I had to buy some gatorade at the concession stand, but it was a great start for our summer meets.  Ha! turns out I already blogged about this meet here.  This blog is getting as hit and miss as my journal is.  yikes!

Image

Daddy finally came home and we were all very happy.  Cutie Pie  had to try on his dog tags and boots while we all just sat in the living room and were happy to be together.

Image

There may have been some silliness.

DH had talked about volunteering for a 4 month deployment to Guatemala in 2014, and I had initially been very positive that we could handle it and that I would be fine because I thought it would be such a good experience for him.

But after this two and a half weeks without him around, I had to confess that I wasn’t sure at all that I could handle everything on my own for 4 months, especially considering that there would also be an added 3 month old baby by then.  He admitted having the same doubts and decided not to volunteer for the mission.  I wish a little bit that I could have let him go, because I know he would have loved the project–which is building and renovating school houses.  But it was the truth that the time would have been a huge struggle for me, so I don’t feel guilty about the decision we made.

And thus ended June….

Poison Ivy

There’s nothing like a bad case of poison ivy to make one feel like a leper….except actually having leprosy, no doubt

Apology & Cherry Pie’s Birthday

9 Sep

I know, it’s been like 5 months since I posted anything for you, my adoring readers.  This is my obligatory apology post.  I have tons of excuses that range from the difficulties of posting from an iPhone to 3 months of the worst morning sickness ever and just being super busy.

The good news is I have tons of fun things saved up to share with you.  I know, you are so glad.

First of all, CHERRY PIE turned 11.

Image

Her hair has gotten so long!  She loves to write and direct plays for the family to perform. She loves creating elaborate plans of all kinds, and then I have to try to make reality measure up.  Luckily, she is pretty happy if I get close.  She is suddenly really helpful with her younger siblings and does chores without me nagging her, which is AWESOME.  She is learning to play flute, just as I did in band, which is super cool.  She scavenged a fat quarter out of my stash and folded it and hand sewed it up the sides and it became a 4 pocket purse with all the stitching on the inside—just did that on her own with no guidance from me and no pattern.  Whoah!

I think she is pretty amazing.

She wanted a Harry Potter Birthday Party

Image

We had a potions class for all her guests.  I boiled a red cabbage and then had jars labeled stuff like unicorn powder and ground mandrake root and basilisk venom (baking soda, washing soda, vinegar, etc.)  The girls had fun mixing and watching the color changes until all the ingredients ran out.)

Blueberry Pie was awesome and carved wands for all the girls from sticks he found outside.

The party was declared a success.  Image

On Running

9 Sep

The Man of the House is training up for his Army PT test and is considering running a 5K.  I told him that if he ran, I would be his Juice Box Bee-yatch.  He got all confused and was like “What?”

Seriously, how can this man have been married to me for 14 years and not know about Juice Box Bee-yatches?

Image

I may never have run a marathon or even a 5K, but I’ve seen the news shots.  And anybody who has seen pictures of marathons or videos of Iron Man Tri-athalon knows that every racer needs someone on the sidelines who is ready with water bottles or Gatorade or juice boxes and Cliff Bars or honey packets or whatever their preferred running fuel might be.  That person on the sidelines is your Juice Box Bee-yatch.  Duh.

If I ever became slightly unhinged and decided to run for “fun,” I would insist on having a Juice Box Bee-yatch.  (It goes with out saying that I would need a sparkly pink velour track suit as well.) Otherwise, where’s the reward?  I mean, sure you can brag that you ran, but there are only 2 kinds of people in this world:  normal people and people who run by choice.  (It doesn’t count if P.E. teachers, coaches, or drill sergeants make you.)

See, so I would either be bragging to someone who could totally one up me by saying something like, “Why yes, your little 5K run sounds very impressive.  Yesterday morning while I was running my ½ marathon…”

Or I would be bragging to a normal people.  When you brag to a normal people about running, they may say something like, “Wow that’s really impressive.”

But inside they are thinking, “Mental note:  this person is slightly insane and cannot be fully trusted.  EVIDENCE A: they claim to enjoy running.”

Yeah, I’d much rather be the Juice Box Bee-yatch.  I could still wear a sparkly pink velour track suit, even.

Pioneer Trek 2013

9 Jun

This is the second time my husband and I have been a “Ma and Pa” on a handcart trek. I feel like we were much better prepared to parent teenagers than we were the first time.

First of all, We were able to remain focused on the kids and what they needed instead of being focused so much on ourselves and our own experience.

Second of all, Blueberry Pie is 13, so we have more experience as parents. Our first trek, our own kids were age 8, 6, and 4. We were still parenting noobs at that time.

My good friend Shelley took care of our kids while we went to Trek.

I was pregnant- just like last time. But this time they decided that starving trekkers the first day was unnecessary, so that helped me stay positive.

This brave girl was wearing a boot cast and wasking with crutches. She was determined to do the whole thing without any help. I spent much time trying to coax her to take things easier and to take her pain medication. But she refused, and the first night she was in a lot of pain. Luckily our camp nurse was there to help us figure out how much Tylenol she could take safely.

Watching the comet

13 Mar

The DH makes sure that the kiddie pies truly get to experience this awesome world we live in.

Ben's avatar"Shadows in the Rain"

Last night the kids and I went looking for comet Pan-STARRS in the western sky.  The day had been partly cloudy, and I worried that we would miss this event.  But at around 7:00 PM the skies looked clear.  So we jumped into the van and headed to the kids’ grandparent’s house where there was an unobstructed view of the horizon.  And they have a telescope too!  So we set up the telescope and brought out a couple pairs of binoculars.

Slowly the thin sliver of the crescent moon emerged.  It was magnificant! But we were waiting for something more elusive.  Finally, the small smudge of light appeared.  We quickly aimed the telescope toward the cosmic wonder.  It was amazing to see.  And I was just as excited for my children to witness the comet as I was.

The telescope provided a good view, but my favorite view was through…

“Y” not?

13 Mar

The DH and I made a tough decision, but a good one, I think. We suspended our Internet service at home.

Why?
#1 Yours truly was wasting too much time on pintrest and Facebook .
#2 Cutie Pie. Wanted to spend all day watching Dora on Amazon Prime.
#3. Our town just opened a new YMCA with pool and climbing wall and Zumba. The price of the monthly membership for a family is the same as what we were paying for internets.

After much debate we decided that we would be healthier and have more fun as a family if we canceled the internets and got a Y membership instead.

I can link up to free wifi a few places in town, so i’m pretty sure I will be able to keep up with the bog. Yay!

I went to Zumba this morning and had a great time. Yay for a change from my same old aerobics tapes! I jiggled my fat all over the place. And I talked 3 friends into going with me. Bwa hahahahahaha…..hahahahahaha…..

I feel thinner already.

The lost book of Ruth

8 Mar

And the mother said unto her children, “Hearken diligently unto me, and eat ye that which is good.”

And the children cried unto their mother, “Mother we wish to eat like unto the Philistines the frosted tarts that pop.”

And the mother prepared an healthy breakfast with wheat and fruits from the vine.

But the children gnashed their teeth and cried,”Nay; but we will have a sugary cereal; that we also may be like all the other children, and that our lunches may be like the other children’s also, give us chips and twinkies and the carbonated sugar drinks.”

And the mother was wroth with her children and declared that the children should henceforth have nothing with which to eat.

And the children repented of their wickedness and ate with gratitude and rejoicing every food which proceeded forth from the kitchen.
