I did something that I haven’t done in awhile: I used the library card catalog to fine a book on a topic. Jason Wilkes’s book “Burn Math Class and Reinvent Math for Yourself” came up.

Today in architecture we learned that the dome of the Capitol building is made of iron, and that it takes 43,000 pounds of paint each time it is repainted. For fun, we guesstimated how many gallons of paint that would be. Surely paint weighs more than water, but since I know water weighs 8lbs per gallon, we used that number and figured it takes 1,075 five gallon buckets of paint to paint the dome.

Recipe for Peanut Butter Playdough
Ingredients
1 cup creamy peanut butter
1 1/2 cups instant powdered milk
3 tablespoons honey
Directions
Stir together peanut butter, instant milk and honey. Knead dough until smooth. If dough is too moist, add more powdered milk. If dough is too dry, add more honey.
Form into critters of their choice, from snakes to monsters. Then decorate the artwork with peanuts, raisins, chocolate chips, and coconut.
